Report an Abandoned Vehicle

This form is NOT monitored 24 hours a day and should only be used to report abandoned vehicles.

If you wish to speak to someone today or for incidents and crimes 'in progress' you should report them by telephoning 101*, or if it is an emergency dial 999

Before you submit a report regarding an abandoned vehicle have you considered the following:

Is the vehicle on the highway/land maintained at public expense?

Does it look unused and in poor condition?

Does it look vandalised and/or fire damaged?

Has it been there, unmoved, for over a week?

Is the vehicle untaxed or SORN?

You can check if vehicle is taxed at www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-tax.

Please be aware that the DVLA will only authorise the removal of vehicles once they are, either, 2 months and 1 day past their tax liability date, or SORN on the highway

Are the wheels or petrol cap missing?

Have any parts been removed or damaged? (broken windows or flat tyres for example)

Has it been parked or abandoned in an isolated or unusual location?

Is it in a known area for abandoned vehicles?

Have you seen anybody use it or act suspiciously around it?

Is it full of rubbish / hazardous / combustible materials?

Please note that we have no powers to remove a vehicle soley for no MOT and no Insurance. Only Officers can remove un-insured vehicles when witnessing them being driven within a 24 hour period

The ELVIS Team will endeavour to arrange inspection of an abandoned vehicle within 24-48 hours of the report being received (please allow extra time over weekends/Bank Holiday periods). Once a vehicle is deemed as abandoned by the relevant Local Authority and processed by the Ops Support Department at Northamptonshire Police it will be removed within the following 24 hours.

The ELVIS Project will assist Land Owners and Landlords in facilitating the removal of vehicles from Private Land yet the responsibility remains not that of Northamptonshire Police and, if assistance is requested, is always given that any disputes will not be managed internally. (all appeals following removal from Private Land will be directed to the Land Owner/Landlord) Please ensure, prior to requesting assistance, that you carry out both of the following: 1. Place a 7-14 day notice on the vehicle asking that it be removed or contact made with the Land Owner 2. Appropriate checks carried out with staff or residents at the location to ensure it is not owned locally. Once you are happy that nobody has claimed the vehicle please contact the ELVIS Project to request removal. Written authority will be requested and it is also preferred that a representative be available at the time of removal. Should the Recovery Operators be unable to conduct removal, due to a dispute or inaccessibility to the vehicle, a call out fee will be payable to the appropriate Recovery Operator; this will not be covered by Northamptonshire Police.
