What is positive action?
Under Section 158 and 159 of the Equality Act 2010, employers can lawfully use positive action in recruitment and promotion, where they reasonably think that people with protected characteristics are under-presented in the workforce, or suffer a disadvantage connected to that protected characteristic.
Where the force has under-representation, positive action measures are implemented to attract, recruit, develop, support and retain our people to progress and make their best possible contribution.

To assist in making the right career choice for you, the Positive Action team regularly host police discovery and engagement events. Supporting you through the application process
We understand that applying for a role in Northamptonshire Police can be daunting and we appreciate the process is long. When you engage with the Positive Action team, we stay in contact with you throughout the recruitment process to offer appropriate support.
Our tried and tested support will give you a better understanding of the different stages of the application process and will help raise your confidence.
- Police staff roles: Different staff roles have different recruitment processes. If you are interested in a police staff role, the Positive Action team can provide feedback on your application before you submit it and help you prepare for the interview.
- PCSO and Police Officer roles: For these roles, candidates need to undertake assessment managed by the College of Policing prior to undertaking the in-force interview. To assist you in your preparation, the Positive Action team host online masterclass sessions to cover all the elements of the assessment process.
All support is provided free of charge.

Your contact with the Positive Action team does not end when you start with Northamptonshire Police. We remain accessible to you throughout your entire career.
In addition to the Positive Action team, there are support staff networks. The support networks mean you are not alone and there are people in force like you and support in place should you need it.
