East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU)

EMSOU is one of the largest collaborative units in the country, delivering specialist capabilities on behalf of the five East Midlands police forces of Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire. Led by a regional Deputy Chief Constable, the unit’s expertise lies in six areas:

Forensic Services (EMSOU-FS)

Carrying out crime scene investigation, and the subsequent range of forensic analysis and evidence handling as part of the investigation process.

Legal Services (EMSOU-LS)

Supporting the forces in relation to employment law, court and discipline, inquests and inquiries, civil litigation, commercial law and conveyancing.

Major Crime (EMSOU-MC)

Investigating cases of suspicious death, including murder and manslaughter inquiries, as well as serious and complex crime.

Regional Organised Crime Unit (EMSOU-ROCU)

Focussing on intelligence gathering and the disruption and investigation of serious and organised criminals. Services include covert tactics, digital forensics, and criminal finance and asset recovery in support of investigations into people, drugs and firearms trafficking, cyber crime, fraud and money laundering, as well as prison corruption. Specifically, the ROCU coordinates the region’s response to modern slavery and human trafficking, and ‘county lines’ activity.

Regional Review Unit (EMSOU-RRU)

Undertaking independent reviews of serious and major crime inquiries, where appropriate, as well as seeking to find new investigative opportunities in undetected ‘cold’ cases.

Special Branch (EMSOU-SB)

Tackling the threat posed to the East Midlands by terrorism and domestic extremism through intelligence gathering and investigation, the monitoring of ports and borders, providing security advice for national infrastructure, hazardous sites and crowded places, and preventing vulnerable people from being radicalised. The unit is part of a national Counter Terrorism Policing Network.
