First aid skills are vital for our officers – not just for caring for people but our four-legged colleagues too.
Our dog handlers recently benefitted from animal first aid training from the team at Towcester Vets, with PDs Rosie, Socks and Frankie enjoying a fuss as the volunteer ‘paw-tients’.
The session at Wootton Hall equipped the officers with potentially life-saving skills, ensuring they are ready to immediately help the very good girls and boys of our Dog Section if they get hurt or sick.
Organiser PC Sam Clark, the Force’s dog training instructor, said: “When you’re paired with a police dog, they become not only your colleague but your best friend.
“The bond we have is incredible, and making sure every handler has the knowledge and skills in place to give their dog first aid in an emergency is essential for protecting and supporting their welfare.
“The session with the Towcester Vets team was great. We’re all very grateful to them for sharing their expertise with us, so we can do all we can to help our dogs in the period before we’re able to get them to a vet.”
