With a sunny bank holiday weekend coming up and many motorcyclists looking forward to a ride in the perfect weather, Chief Constable Nick Adderley is taking the opportunity to encourage bikers to ride safely and other road users to look out for motorcycles on the road.
A keen motorcyclist himself, Chief Constable Adderley is the National Police Chiefs' Council lead for motorcycling and BikeSafe, and is endorsing the policing operations taking place across the country over the bank holiday weekend which are aiming to keep bikers safe.
One such operation is taking place in the north of the country, where many bikers will be travelling to this weekend, and involves a number of forces including North Yorkshire Police, include Humberside Police, West Yorkshire Police, Durham Constabulary, Cleveland Police, South Yorkshire Police, Lancashire Constabulary, Cheshire Constabulary and Northumbria Police.
The operation will involve police bikers travelling to popular motorcyclist meeting spots and engaging with the bikers there about staying safe on the roads, riding in line with the speed limit, and the importance of ensuring bikes are well maintained and road legal.
Other road users will also be educated around how they can play their part in reducing the risk of injury to motorcyclists.
Chief Constable Nick Adderley, said: “This bank holiday weekend looks to be the perfect weather for motorcycling and as a keen biker myself, I know that many fellow motorcycling enthusiasts will be taking the opportunity to get out and about across the country on their motorbikes.
“Sadly, motorcyclists continue to be one of the most likely group of road users to be killed or seriously injured on the roads which is why I want to take this opportunity to urge safe riding this weekend.
“I would also urge other road users, particularly car, van and lorry drivers, to look out for motorcyclists on the road and to spend that extra time making sure they are driving as safely as possible to ensure every motorcyclist gets home safely to their family this weekend.
“As the national lead for motorcycling, I am pleased to hear about the operations taking place, including the one in the north of the country, which aim to educate people on how we can keep each other safe on the roads this weekend.
“I look forward to hearing about the public engagement the operations will hopefully achieve this weekend and want to reassure the public that similar operations will continue to take place in the future.”
