A 19-year-old man has been sentenced to two years and two months in prison after he pleaded guilty to an incident of affray.
Amjad Ali, previously of Alcombe Road, Northampton, was arrested following an isolated incident during the protests in Kettering Road, Northampton, shortly after 7pm, last Wednesday (August 7).
During the incident, there was a scuffle between a group of people, resulting in the arrest of three people.
Ali was arrested on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm and affray. No further action was taken in relation to the alleged assault but he pleaded guilty to the affray at Northampton Crown Court today (August 12).
He was sentenced by Her Honour Judge Lucking to two years and two months in prison, 12 months of which was as a result of a previous suspended sentence.
Two other people - a man and woman from Northampton - were also arrested on suspicion of affray in connection with the same incident.
A 34-year-old man has been released on police bail pending further enquiries, while a 34-year-old woman has been released without charge.
Detective Chief Superintendent Rich Tompkins said: “The planned protest last week resulted in the biggest public order policing operation for many years within Northamptonshire and I’m really pleased that it passed without any major incidents.
“The incident involving Amjad Ali was the only issue on the night and once again, I’d like to thank the local community for their support.
“There was some really positive engagement between our officers and the public and we hope to build on that going forward.”
