Man, 41, sentenced for causing death by careless driving

A 41-year-old man has been sentenced to two years in prison for causing the death of 47-year-old motorcyclist – Neil Strangward.

Marias Kramer, 41, previously of Verwood Close, Northampton, was driving a BMW 3 Series just after midday on July 13, 2019, when he drove into the back of a stationary Toyota Prius in Birds Hill Road.

The force of the impact pushed the Prius into the opposite side of Lings Way where it collided with Neil’s Honda motorcycle. Sadly, he died at the scene.

An investigation by Northamptonshire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit ascertained that Kramer did not attempt to brake before he collided with the Prius. He was subsequently charged in connection with Neil’s death as a result.

At Northampton Crown Court this week, Kramer was sentenced to two years in prison.

Detective Sergeant Mahesh Patel, said: “This was an exceptionally sad case to investigate as Neil Strangward was cruelly taken from this world in circumstances that could easily have been prevented had Marias Kramer just taken more care behind the wheel.

“There is no sentence that could make up for the loss of Neil as he was a much-loved man and my thoughts remain with his family at what is still a very difficult time.”

Neil’s wife, Sara Branca, said: “As the trial concludes, I would like to thank the police for the dedication they have shown in bringing this case to trial; the CPS for the eloquence in presenting and arguing the case; and the jury for delivering their verdict. I applaud them all for their commitment to seek justice.

“Still, I feel that I cannot fully rejoice because my husband is gone forever, and sadly this favourable outcome will not bring him back.

“We had five wonderful years together but had married only three weeks prior to that fateful day. The happy memories from that day, which by Neil's own admission was the happiest of his life, and of the many others we shared, brings me comfort today. We were very happy and very much in love.

“Sadly, he was taken away too soon and in such a tragic manner that it is still hard to fully comprehend or come to terms with. Neil was a kind, loving and thoughtful man. He is still very much loved and never far from my thoughts and my heart.”

Neil’s daughter, Rebecca Strangward, said: “Our family is disappointed with the jury's verdict but we feel thankful that the defendant will at least serve a sentence for causing Neil's death.

“Neil was always a careful motorcyclist and, above all, he was a thoughtful and generous person who brought so much happiness to others.

“After nearly two years of waiting for this chapter to conclude, Neil would hope that we are able to find some of the closure we need from this outcome. We will love and miss him every day for the rest of our lives.”
