FOI 17211-25 - Keyed Cars
Request:
Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, I would like to request data regarding incidents of criminal damage involving vehicles being “keyed” (scratched using a key or similar sharp object) within your area.
Could you please provide the following data for the period 01/07/2024 – 01/07/2025:
- The total number of reported incidents of cars being keyed.
- The make and model of the cars involved in each incident.
- The colour of the cars involved in each incident.
If your systems do not record incidents of cars being specifically ‘keyed’ as a category, or if it is not possible to provide this information within the cost limits, please provide available data relating to criminal damage, vandalism or tampering instead.
If possible, please provide this data in an Excel spreadsheet (or a similar format), broken down by month within the given time period
Response:
Search for offences recorded as Criminal Damage to a Motor Vehicle under £5000 and over £5000 between 1st July 2024 and 30th June 2025 inclusive with the make, model and colour of each car damaged where recorded. Key words “key” and “scratch” applied.
As with any keyword search, the search will only return exact matches within the Crime MO. This does not account for differences in terminology and/or spelling used. Keyword searches are problematic and in no way provide accurate results or figures. If the selected key words have not been mentioned, the data will not be returned. Vice versa, if the key words have been mentioned in an unrelated context, irrelevant data will be collected.
A single offence may involve more than one car. Conversely, an individual car may be involved in more than one offence. Where a car has been damaged more than once, it will be counted in the data for questions 2 and 3 each time.
