Stop and search legislation – know your rights
The use of stop and search powers helps the police tackle crime and keep our communities safe.
A police officer can stop and question you at any time and they need no reason to do this.
They can also stop and search you depending on the situation, however, they must have reasonable grounds for doing this and they are required to tell you why they are searching you.
