How will I know if I have to register

If your visa say 'Police Registration within 7 days of arrival' or 'Report extension to the Police' you must attend the office within 7 days to register.

If you are from any of the countries listed below, you are required by the Home Office to register with the Police

Afghanistan, Algeria, Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Belarus, Bolivia, Brazil, China, Colombia, Cuba, Egypt, Georgia, Hong Kong, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Libya, Moldova, Morocco, North Korea, Oman, Palestine, Peru, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, U.A.E., Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Yemen.

Why do I have to register with the Police?

The Immigration Regulation Act 1972 (Registration with the Police) is a legal requirement made by the Home Office. Failure to register with the Police is a criminal offence and could lead to prosecution.

Where do I have to register?

You can register at Overseas Visitors Registration surgeries; these run:

Between 9am - 2.45pm every Thursday at The Guildhall, St Giles Square, Northampton NN1 1DE (map)

What documents do I need for a first time registration?

  • Passport
  • Visa
  • £34.00
  • 2 Passport sized photographs
  • Confirmation of your University / College and Course (if applicable)
  • Work Permit / work and/or employers details (if applicable)
  • Confirmation of your address (contract, bill, bank statement, if you have any)

You can speed up your registration process by printing off and completing the Overseas Visitor Registration Form below, and bringing it with you to the office.

» Once you have registered, you will need to report ANY changes to the Police within 7 days (see below).

I have already registered with the Police, what do I need to report?

Once you have registered you must inform the Police of any changes within 7 days.

These changes include:

  • Change of address
  • Change of employment / University / College Study course
  • Visa extension / new Visa conditions
  • New Passport
  • Change of marital status
  • If you are unsure of any other changes, contact the Overseas Visior Registration Officer

To report any of these changes, attend your registration appointment with your Passport, Police Registration Certificate and any other relevant documentation.

I have already registered with the Police elsewhere, do I need to register again?

If you have registered with the Police in another town or city and now live in the Northamptonshire area you are required to report to the Police. You will need to attend the office with the following documents (where applicable):

  • Your Passport
  • Your Police Registration Certificate
  • 1 Passport sized photograph
  • Confirmation of your University / College and Course (if applicable)
  • Work Permit / work and/or employers details (if applicable)
  • Confirmation of your address (contract, bill, bank statement, if you have any)

What are the Opening Hours?

Between 9am - 2.45pm every Thursday at The Guildhall, St Giles Square, Northampton NN1 1DE

Please Note: Surgery hours and additional surgery locations may be increased / varied dependant upon seasonal demand.

I am leaving the UK; do I need to report to the Police?

If you are leaving the UK for more than 2 months you must inform the Police of when you will depart and the date that you will return. If you are leaving the UK permanently you must return your Police Registration Certificate to the Northamptonshire Police Overseas Visitor Registration Officer, with your departure date and airport details.
