Royal Association for Deaf (RAD)
RAD is a deaf led organisation who promote the welfare and interests of deaf people throughout the country. They believe deaf people should receive the same access and opportunities as hearing people. Not only does RAD support deaf people whose first or preferred language is British Sign Language (BSL), they also work with people with all forms of deafness including those who are hard of hearing, deafened, or deafblind. Services cover the following areas:
- Advice, Advocacy and Employment Services – helping support deaf people achieve independence and understand rights and finances. They also provide employment and legal advice, and specialist support for deaf people from black and ethnic minority communities
- Children, Families and Youth Service - providing activities and support groups for families with parents and/or children who are deaf or hard of hearing. They also run activities that give deaf teenagers skills and confidence for adulthood
- Deaf Community Development - by working with deaf clubs and other self-help groups, they provide deaf people with places to meet as well as social and leisure activities
- Interpreting – a professional, competitively priced service provides high quality British Sign Language/English Interpreters, Deafblind Interpreters, Lipspeakers, Note-takers and Speech to Text Reporters
- Social Care – providing specialist support for deaf people who are old, or have learning disabilities and/or mental health challenges, as well as providing support to those who care for them
The RAD also provides an emergency service that is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
